Northern Ireland’s Michael Laverty has clinched the British Supersport title in a thrilling two-part race at Donington Park.
The 26-year-old celebrated his 2007 title with a win in the eight-lap sprint. The race was red flagged and then restarted after John Robb’s engine blew up leaving a trail of oil over the circuit which caused several riders to fall off their motorcycles.
Aaron Walker initially took the lead in part one on his Honda after battling with pole man Michael Laverty for the top spot while Yamaha’s Tom Grant was third.
Grant lost his third place to Laverty’s Relentless Suzuki teammate Ian Lowry on lap five while Laverty regained the lead.
The race was then stopped on lap nine as John Robb’s engine let go on his Honda with several riders falling off on the oil slick.
The restart saw Michael Laverty lose his early lead to Aaron Webb in a near identical repeat of the first part of the race.
But on lap four Michael Laverty took control for the race win and the title.
