Steve Plater lands World Supersport wildcard

AIM Yamaha’s Steve Plater has been drafted in late to ride at this weekend’s Brands Hatch World Supersport round.

Plater will be representing the Triumph Italia Be1 Racing squad, taking the spot of the injured Ivan Clementi in what team boss Giuliano Rovelli is calling ‘a charming marriage’ of an English rider at an English circuit.

After struggling at the beginning of the season in Superbikes and an impressive Northwest 200 performance, Plater dropped out of BSB in favour of the Supersport championship with the AIM Yamaha team.

And with a win already under his belt in the Supersport class, Rovelli said he was the right man for the job.

“I am disappointed for Ivan because while training on his off road bike he has developed a problem with his hand.

“We have been looking for a rider that has a high standard of competitiveness and we believe Steve Plater is the right person.

“He’s an aggressive and brave rider and pleases a lot of people, especially the English public.”

Plater will partner Australian Mark Aitchison on the Daytona 675 and line up alongside fellow British Superbike and Supersport riders including Billy McConnell, Karl Harris and Steve Martin.
