BMW has made the new R1200GS Adventure more comfortable, easier to ride and an even more accomplished adventure bike. It might be more refined and luxurious than ever but crucially it’s still the ultimate go-anywhere tourer and will comfortably hoover-up miles of tarmac, mud and whatever else you decide to throw at it.

BMW updated the 1200 in 2018 before replacing it with the R1250GS Adventure in 2019. Then 2023 saw the release of an all-new BMW R1300GS and we expect to see a new Adventure model based on that bike sooner or later.

You might not literally be able to ride over water, but you get the feeling that with BMW it’s only a matter of time! A worthy successor to the legendary Adventure name.

Owners aren’t going to buy the new Adventure to ride like a loon, but it handles crisply, like a sportsbike on the twisties, like a smooth tourer on the motorway and an enduro off-road. It also boasts an enviable level of electronic sophistication, which helps you ride faster, safer and smoother.

BMW reckon you can squeeze 350 miles from the new 30-litre tank and with its spacious riding position and loads of little luxuries such as heated grips and power sockets, not to mention the tall screen, this may well be achievable.

The new motor is a peach, mixing power, refinement and ground-churning levels of grunt. Spin the 125bhp liquid-cooled boxer engine hard and the Adventure leaps out of corners, emitting a pleasing, gravelly exhaust note as it does so.

On the way into corners, the motor pops and bangs on the overrun. Select ‘Rain’ mode and you get an electronic comfort blanket that takes the edge off the power delivery and gives you full ABS and traction control. Many still scoff at electronic aids but when you are on a big bike like the Adventure, they really make a difference to your confidence levels.

The boxer engine is very reliable and the level of build quality very high. The Adventure is a rugged bike designed to take on the world, and win!

2014 BMW R1200GS Adventure in blue right side

Our BMW R1200GS Adventure owners' reviews suggest that the finish on the bike can be a bit of a mixed bag, with some reporting corrosion, flaking paint, electrical gremlins (including unresponsive switchgear) and suspension issues amongst other problems. Others haven't had a problem, though.

It certainly seems like it's worth having a good poke around any used examples you consider buying, take a good look in all the nooks and crannies for corrosion and test all the electronics and switchgear thoroughly.

Next up: Equipment
4 out of 5 (4/5)

The fact that in basic specification, the Adventure wasn’t that much more than the standard GS tempted a lot of riders into buying one so there are plenty on the used market now (2024).

And with the new BMW R1300GS expected to be followed by its own Adventure model, you could get an even better deal on what is still a cracking bike despite being two generations old.

A decent R1200GS Adventure of this vintage and with relatively low mileage will currently cost you around £10,000 - give or take depending on condition and mileage. When you consider that a soon-to-be replaced BMW R1250GS Adventure will set you back £16,360 before you've added any extras and a base-spec R1300GS is £15,990, that is a great deal.

2014 BMW R1200GS Adventure on sidestand

Outside of BMW's stable, the 2012 Triumph Tiger 1200 Explorer was slightly less rugged than the GS but still thoroughly capable machine. Used prices on the Triumph are even better than the GSA, with good examples starting around £7k.

In the modern market, we're still waiting for an R1300GSA to be announced but the latest Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally is likely to be the bike's main competitor. Ducati have also taken their big adventure bike off-roading with the latest Multistrada V4 Rally.

4 out of 5 A great bike with plenty of punch and good capability.

Version: TE

Year: 2016

Annual servicing cost: £600

A good all-round bike with fantastic punch, surprising capability and generally a cracking bit of kit. It has good power with reasonable electronics, only let down by the agricultural gearbox and some weird design choices by BMW. On the whole, my 4.5 years of ownership covering 55,000 miles were brilliant.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Ride was fantastic. Smooth and brilliant on braking. Brakes were awesome and complimented highly by the front suspension not diving.

Engine 4 out of 5

Good noise, punchy, plenty of power and great fun. Not as powerful as some competitors but had a few sportsbike riders blushing at their inability to get away on normal roads.

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Generally, they're fine. Rear suspension was on its way out very early on and BMW wanted £2000 for new front and rear shocks as they were no longer covered, upgraded to Touratech/Tractive and didn't look back. And I did have a rear caliper throw up into the wheel taking out all the spokes on one side. BMW disputed it so I had to cough up the money. Switchgear is a big weakpoint. Buttons fail after 2/3 years and some of the finish on the bike is done cheaper than you'd expect. But otherwise, I can't really complain.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

This is very subjective. I serviced the bike more than required, final drive included. Everything is fairly easy to access, valves are easy, as are spark plugs. So some of the costs are offset due to the ease at getting to them. Costs for me certainly, were about average and what you'd expect.

Equipment 4 out of 5

Electronics were good. Not great, but good. Traction isn't separate to wheelie, so in some scenarios, that's annoying. Quick shifter and autoblipper are agricultural. Otherwise, no complaints.

Buying experience: From a dealer with approved used warranty in 2019. Buying was okay, dealer used to be very good. Unfortunately not so much anymore which has resulted in a change of manufacturer.

Only 2 dislikes, Mirrors are small and speed indicator not that clear, I have had to put red tape on, indicating 30,50 & 70 mph.Likes - Handles great, loads of torque, good mpg, very good range with a 30 Ltr tank, no range anxiety. It is a very heavy and large bike, I am 5'8'' with a 30 leg, bike is on its lowest setting, need to lean bike slightly to have full foot down or just balls of the feet when upright. You can feel weight of bike when stationary but when moving feels light.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

You can ride for hours and not feel the strain. Just done a trip all over Scotland including the NC500, 1600 miles total, averaging 300 miles a day, felt great at the end of it. Only negative I found, being a very tall bike, if wind gusts got over 20mph, you felt them.

Engine 5 out of 5

Engine performs well, more power than you need. Shaft drive is a dream.I averaged 66mpg and range was over 400 miles when I did the NC500 but I rarely went over 60mph.

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Bought bike 2nd hand from a dealership with 20K on the clock. Build quality is good, there was some surface rust on the frame in places but I treated that straight away. Just done a 1600 mile round trip doing the NC500, bike performed well.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

It is an expensive brute compared to most bikes, but you pay for quality. I paid £9,500. Servicing is no more expensive than other bikes of similar cc I found.

Equipment 5 out of 5

Excellent equipment on my GSA, 5 different riding modes. Cruise control takes a lot of fatigue off you over the long motorway cruising.

Buying experience: Bought off a Dealership. no problems, paid £9,500

5 out of 5 First time GS owner
30 December 2021 by Yorkspud

Version: Triple Black TE

Year: 2017

I wondered what the attraction was for some time. I had sold my Honda Blackbird and bought a Versys 1000 GT. But after riding the adventure style bike for a while, I looked again at the GS and traded my Versys in for a Triple Black GS. So impressed so far, the build quality is very good and the comfortable riding style is great for distance. I should have gone straight for the GS on reflection.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

I have had the bike out on various types of roads around Lancashire and Yorkkshire, a good variation that my bike handled very well. I can ride for several hours with no need for a break, I also have no back ache or sore knees when I get off my bike now. A trip to Scotland will test the Pillion comfort, but no doubts on that score.

Engine 5 out of 5

Powerful and smooth with loads of torque, the range or spread of power is ideal for motorway overtakes or quick blasts when needed. I was used to inline fours previously, but the boxer engine is very impressive.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

My bike was well loooked after by the previous owner, but after getting to know my GS over time, it is very well made and there are no signs of corrosion. Reliability has so far been good, no concerns on that.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

So far I have not had my GS serviced, but I called a local dealer and they gave me the service costs and schedules. Okay, a bit more than my Honda and Kawasaki. However it is a BMW and they cost money to run, but i do not feel the cost is excessive. Time will tell I suppose.

Equipment 5 out of 5

My bike came with the full electronics package and comfort pack, it has heated grips and full aluminium luggage. The keyless system is a good idea, but I love the cruise control the most. The bike came with new tyres, so I cannot comment on that. I have just upgraded my Sat Nav so the BMW system will not be a consideration, it is expensive I believe.

Buying experience: I bought my GS from a non BMW dealer and got a fair trade in price and put some money towards the price. I paid £13,000, which was right when compared to the same bikes on sale. I received great service from the dealer, they were very good.

5 out of 5 With 550,000 miles on BMW Motorcycles, this is the finest BMW I've owned.

Annual servicing cost: £80

With over 550,000 miles on BMW motorcycles, this is the finest BMW I have owned. The motor is simply amazing and much easier to maintain. With over 67,000 miles, I required only 1 shim change that cost me $8. The new dynamic ride setting and ABS are the best of any bike on the market.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

The best suspension and brakes on any bike.

Engine 5 out of 5

With over 550,000 miles on BMW motorcycles, this is the best motor of them all. Incredible power and responsiveness to the ride.

This bike has never broke down or had a part failure. I did have a recall for a reinforcement coupling on the front forks.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Since I service my bikes, the cost is for BMW oil and filters. Checking the valve shims cost nothing unless need replacement. I replaced 1 shim at 67,000 miles that cost $8.

The ability to ride all day on or off road, and the ability to pack like a mule without any affect to the bikes handling.

2 out of 5 Engine failure on 2016 BMW R1200 GS WC Adventure TE.
26 February 2017 by Paul Manson

Year: 2016

Annual servicing cost: £1,500

Overall the bike was noisy at low speed, the riding experience was very good but there was always a niggling feeling of don't push the bike incase it fails, it did. I have no faith in BMW bike products it will take a lot to change mine and many others opinions.

Ride quality & brakes 1 out of 5

Discs corrode after being ridden, very poor for suck a high end bike, discs are thin and care is required, for a off-road bike this is poor.

Engine 1 out of 5

Noisy and very lumpy at low raves through towns, still noisy which I complained about to BMW. Eventually its had full engine failure at 10K after 8 months of ownership mostly winter. This is extremely disappointing and all trust in quality has gone after owning BMW bike for years with no issues ever this R1200 GS WC TE, has been a nightmare.

Reliability & build quality 1 out of 5

Various corrosion issues all passed of by the dealer as being normal and that I should paint myself. Electrical issues and switches inoperative. Paint issues on tank lacquer peeling off. Complete engine failure and knocking noise, metal in oil when drained by the dealer, as yet not resolved.

Value vs rivals 2 out of 5

The new GS has a habit of eating rear tyres and Michelin has assisted in providing tyres Pilot Road 4 (brilliant road grip in the wet or dry) to address the issue, maximum milage achieved has been 2700 and as low as 1400, I've had four sets of tyres in 8 months of riding. Fuel consumption leaves a lot to be desired, its not economical with varied riding all distances of 50-600 miles. Servicing is astronomical from BMW with seemingly no fixed costs.

Equipment 1 out of 5

GPS and electrical glitches continue, gear selector failure.

Buying experience: Very poor the bike I ordered was built wrong and recalled, the replacement from a UK dealership has been a suspect bike from the start. The dealer was not at fault, BMW customer service is appalling.

2 out of 5 Poor build quality and they corrode for fun
14 January 2017 by Craig Sterling

Version: TE

Year: 2014

I bought this bike brand spanking new in June 2014 and believed that I was buying a quality motorcycle from a premium manufacturer. As we all know, they are not cheap and all the press reviews raved about how well they ride. The motorcycle journalists are not equipped with a crystal ball and can't tell you what it's really like owning the big GS in the real world. The corrosion (rust) issues started to manifest themselves on my bike when it was around 8 months old. The bike had been treated professionally with ACF50 within the first few weeks of my ownership and was washed twice a week using SDOC100 gel cleaner. I would then top up the ACF50 with a hand spray about once a month. I started to notice that the front and rear wheels were stained and that this staining seemed to be coming from the spoke apetures. The frame started to show tiny specks of rust and I noticed that the coating of the shaft drive housing was beginning to oxidise. A thorough inspection of the bike revealed that the engine was also starting to corrode and the coating was peeling off due to the oxidisation. The main stand was also suffering and was more red than black due to the rust. I alerted the franchised dealer (Chester Motorrad) and it was agreed that they would look at the issues when the bike came back in for the big service. By the time the big service was due the bike had a number of other issues such as the rear brake pedal sticking on causing the rear disc and pads to wear out and the left hand Adventure lamp flashing and then packing in. The dealer at first decided that the majority of these issues were my fault and that I had neglected the bike, stating that I wasnt using the bike properly (How do you not use a bike properly?) After getting a bit shirty with them they eventually caved in and agreed to raise these issues with BMW Motorrad using the internal PuMA system. I'm going to cut a very long story short by saying that after a fair bit of tooing and frowing, the bike went into the dealers in October 2016 and was rebuilt using the following new parts. Wheels front and rear. Engine and complete frame. Rear drive unit external and internal (it had rusted inside) Main stand. Rear disc and pads. I went to collect the bike after about 5 weeks and was told that all of the warranty work had been completed and that the bike had been properly tested and was now good to go. After about 3 miles I realised that the bike was not quite right and returned to the dealers. The front tyre was only partially inflated and the rear shock absorber had thrown its hand in. So much for the thorough testing? I little more discussion took place with the dealer and they consulted BMW UK and eventually agreed to replace the defective unit as part of the warranty claim. I was then told by Chester Motorrad to bring the bike back for the first oil change and that they would deal with any further issues that had resulted from the rebuild of the bike. I contacted the dealer last week to book the bike in and told them that the rear brake pedal has siezed solid again, the front tyre would not hold pressure for more than a few days, the adventure fog lamp had done the flickering thing and then had thrown its hand in and finally one of the LED's in the rear indicator had decided to stop working. All of these things had manifested themselves in the space of a few weeks. They sealed the front tyre, did the oil and filter change, but have insisted that the other issues are again down to me neglecting the bike and that they would require me to pay for any subsequent parts and labour.I flatly refused this and rode the bike home. I'm going to give BMW one final chance to sort this out and if they don't then my only option is to put the matter in front of a court. The bike is fantastic and it rides really well but the quality issues are appalling. I wouldnt recommend this model of bike to anyone.

After having numerous bikes over the years a friend introduced me into the GS world. I had never even considered one thinking there not for me. But one ride on my first GS adventure changed everything. They truly are a bike for all seasons. They forgive, inspire confidence, eat the miles and are great fun on the twistys!!! Get one and you will not be sorry.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Outstanding ride and handling. Had lots of fun dusting sports bike round Austria. Brakes are pin sharp and the telelever suspension is outstanding, allowing for some aggressive braking into corners...if required. Long distance, then the seat needs works. BMW take note my bum suffered! Th ride though is superb 300-400 mile day....easy!

Engine 4 out of 5

Granted the engine is a little noisy and agricultural, but it pulls like a train and loaded up it with panniers and pillion it still eat the miles.

Long legs, but too ungainly and very uncomfortable for a long distance tourer.

Ride quality & brakes 3 out of 5

The brakes are excellent and cant be faulted. The ride quality and comfort however are poor. The engine vibrates at an unacceptable level and can be very fatiguing on a long journey. The seat is hard and too thin and the suspension is too stiff even on the softest settings

Engine 4 out of 5

Plenty of power handles all situations with ease. But, very agricultural, fuelling needs some work ,and there is a lack the refinement you would expect at this price point.

Reliability & build quality 3 out of 5

Cheap flimsy plastics, very poor quality paintwork, poor attention to detail and and finish where the manufacturer things you wont see it!

Value vs rivals 3 out of 5

Bmw service is very expensive and im sorry to say can be very poor these days. In the last 18 months ive had the engine substantially overfilled with oil twice! And the bike dropped and damaged!

Plenty of bells and whistles which is nice, but not all that neccesary.
