The performance cruiser is a strange concept - why do you need to go fast on a lowrider? But if power is your thing, then the VTX1800 has got plenty of it, a certain classy elegance about its lines and the mandatory V-twin shaped engine. Also has Honda's linked braking system.

The big 1800 has decent suspension on it, although the USD front forks are non-adjustable. The VTX handles well for something so heavy, but it lacks real ground clearance, so cornering has to be slow and steady. The VTX1300 has conventional forks and slightly softer suspension, but the same low-to-the-ground chassis layout.

Engine

5 out of 5 (5/5)

Although the VTX1300 lacks a bit of punch, you cannot say that of the 1800, which makes a meaty 115 ft/lbs of torque at 3000rpm. That's grunt baby. The engine is typically Honda smooth, with just enough vibes to remind you it is in fact a V-twin. Slicker gearbox than most big cruisers, plus shaft drive.

It's hard to fault the build quality of Honda's American made cruisers and the VTX range are no exception. The engines are superb, the finish and chrome details are durable and there's a good range of accessories. You would be unlucky to get a rogue VTX1300/1800.

Value vs rivals

Next up: Equipment
4 out of 5 (4/5)

The VTX1300 looks a bargain at £2000 less than the 1800, but offering similar performance. Find a Honda VTX1800 for sale.

Equipment

3 out of 5 (3/5)

The VTX1800 is a bit more expensive than some other big cruisers and you'd expect a bit more for your money frankly. It does have a credible dual seat, which some rivals don't, and the 1300 variant has a slightly bigger 18 litre gas tank plus better mudguards, making it more practical in rainy UK.

I bought it used. But in excelent con.5700 miles. For such a large bike it has great balance. It launches as hard as you want it. Better cruiser than the 85 superglide i had by far.

5 out of 5 2019 Evaluation of a 2005 VTX-1800 R Spec 3

I have no "worst" features concerning this model. I bought it for the purpose of riding to wherever I wanted to go. With as little luggage and extras as possible. Reliability and ergonomic comfort were priority. Honda missed the mark concerning several pieces of equipment that should have been O.E.. But they gave you a machine that is reliable as hell, inexpensive to maintain and can be "dressed" to fit any level.

Best braking cycle I have ridden in 50+ years! Always stop at about 120 miles just to loosen up and re hydrate. With a simple Gel Pad you can ride dawn to dusk and feel fresh!

Engine 5 out of 5

More power than you need! Never a hiccup! This V-Twin is so smooth and with the stock exhaust system is very quiet. She is a "Sleeper"! Piss her off and she'll put you back in your seat for a wild ride!

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Has lived outdoors since bought. Always starts! Always!!

2019 brings an oil change and replacement of front fork seals. It is 15 years old and I know that some items have to be replaced.

Equipment 5 out of 5

Do not need the fancy crap! Stopping at 120 miles gives you the chance to refuel, use the Loo, get a refreshment and snack, check your phone for message's and loosen your "old bones" for the next 120 miles.

Buying experience: Sold by the son of the former owner, who was a Disabled Veteran, who had passed on. Only 16K miles. 2018 bought for $3500.00.

This bike has been a true warrior. I have just over 70,000 miles on her and I have just not had to start replacing things due to wear and tear. Had to redo the fork seals, clutch and had the charge regulator break off but all that didn't happen until recently. Extremely reliable, wicked fast and easy to work on.

5 out of 5 Honda VTX 1800 & 1300

I ride with the VTX Road Riders Association. We are a VTX owners / enthusiasts club. Our members have either the VTX1800 or the VTX1300. I personally ride a 1300 and I have to say it is a fantastic ride. The ratings in the MCN article are close to being spot on. You can sit in the saddle all day long on these machines and still feel fresh at the end of your journey. Many of our members have chosen to customize their machines by adding aftermarket parts and accessories, making each bike very individual. One of the only bug bears we have is that, trying to get hold of Honda VTX custom parts here in the UK proves to be very difficult and expensive. We often have to buy from the states as in many cases it works out cheaper to do it this way. Our dealers in the UK either charge over inflated prices for parts or import them for anyway, again at inflated cost. I appreciate that we don't have the vast amount of VTX's here as in the states, but it would be good if some UK dealers considered their policies on aftermarket cruiser parts. In the meantime, we have to live with it, but it doesn't stop us enjoying the bikes and all that they have to offer. If anybody wants to know more about our group, please go to www.vtxrra.co.uk or email me at gary@vtxrra.co.uk
