The Brutale 800 Dragster is a very specific type of bike for a very specific purpose. Don’t expect it to go touring or suffer a daily commute.

It’s a proper Sunday show-off, at home honing about streets and back lanes, using its banging midrange and sorted throttle response to boss traffic with extravagant disdain. It’s as good as its looks; if you like them, you’ll love the Dragster. Delightfully wayward…the Dragster is an unashamedly adrenaline-fuelled riot from start to finish.

On the road, the Dragster is right at home. Steering is light, precise, and flicks off the bumps and ridges with entertaining eagerness. The bike’s propensity to wheelie, even with traction control dialled in, is almost as astonishing as its stability. The oversize rear tyre limits scratching in the really tight stuff and its effect is proven by half-an-inch of unused rubber on the sides of the front tyre. And the suspension is harsh over big bumps, crashing them into the chassis. But overall the impression is of big, big grins…

MV have worked hard to sort out their initial fuelling woes. Ever since the F3 675 was launched, MVs have been criticised for hesitant and unpredictable throttle control. The new Rivale showed they’d solved the problems and, with the new settings rolled out across the range, the Dragster confirms it – the engine is an absolute belter and a joy to use in any of its four power modes. It’s a big thumbs up to MV’s electronics engineers.

MV’s new triples are still to prove their reliability, but the finish appears good.

The price is slightly high for an 800, but this is a premium Italian product.

4 out of 5 Italian Fizz!

Year: 2014

Best feature - tie between the looks and the engine character. Worst feature - the fuelling. Abysmal at low speed.

Ride quality & brakes 3 out of 5

Brakes amazing. Ride is harsh and choppy over bad surfaces.

Engine 5 out of 5

Complete lunatic engine. Just wants to reeeeevvvvv! But low speed electronic throttle control appalling. and dangerous. Spent £350 on a new ECU and another £350 to get it set up on a rolling road.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Amazing design. No spanners needed!

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

I do my own servicing

Equipment 3 out of 5

Its built for fun and games for one. The LCD instrument cluster is just OK. The seating position is radical and not really suited to long trips.

Buying experience: Bought from a bike supermarket unseen. A fair return for taking that chance. But I planned to customise paint job so condition not that important.

THE SEAT IS AWFUL, however I did a tour of the Pyrenees and northern Spain, with backpack and rack. The seat was bad but a comfy gel helped a lot, the others were on tigers, GS, and 1400 kwak. when ever you stop anywhere people stop to look. exhaust QD TAKE THOSE BAFFLES OUT. You certainly get noticed with those triple pipes. And boy did it like the twisties in Wales and Pyrenees.

If you need to stop...don't worry it will do easily.

Engine 5 out of 5

Oh my god!

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Sprag clutch gear failed early in its life..but touch wood sorted under warranty.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

The big one is 7500 miles where it is major with valves checked adjusted.

Equipment 4 out of 5

It's electronics can be a bit fiddly as in the different modes and custom setup.

Buying experience: Private with 600 miles...London rider who did not get on with her.
