MCN Fleet: Triumph Street Twin battles Spanish trails

MCN's Triumph Street Twin heads to Oliana for the Austin Vince Twinshock Trailfinder as our Spanish saga continues…

For the next two days, and without GPS just our brains to navigate, we’ll be riding our two scramblerised Street Twins on the countless miles of farm tracks and trails in the Pyrenees as we take on this treasure hunt style event.

TOP STORIES

On the way we picked up a 1970s Triumph T120 Bonneville and its owner Ian to make up our required team of three.

Then event organiser Austin Vince took one of the Street Twins for a quick spin down one of the trails and declared the bikes ‘scary’ with ‘50 times more power’ than he was used to. Despite those comments, he remained optimistic about the bike’s chances on the trails.

Much to our amusement, Vince pulled down his custom-made overalls to reveal a tattoo of a Triumph logo on his leg. His first bike was a 1960s Bonneville.

Trails could be a risky business

With the Continental TKC80 off-road tyres fitted, the front tyre clearance was tight but we abandoned any attempts to raise the mudguards with spacers as we couldn’t get the fixing bolts back in.

If any stones do become jammed in between the guard and tyre, we will have to remove the guards altogether, possibly risking damage to the vulnerable radiator.

With everything from Cheney Triumphs to Suzuki PE 400s taking part, the event has an eclectic mix of machines so our team of three Triumphs certainly fit in.

Stay tuned for more.
