Motorcycle insurance bargains: Kawasaki W650

Published: 05 February 2010

Motorcycle insurance costs are an important consideration for any bike buyer. That's why MCN is highlighting some of the best cheap-to-insure motorcycles out there. This time it's the Kawasaki W650.

Insurance group: 8
Engine: 675cc 8v parallel twin, 6 gears
Power: 49bhp
Top speed: 110mph
Weight: 195kg

The Kawasaki W650 may be a 60's throwback in styling terms (the exhausts are closer to a 60s Bonneville than Triumph’s own latter day replica), but not in technical terms. Modern handling, engine and reliability means all the joy of a classic with none of the grief. Plus it's only group 8 to insure.

The W650'S 49bhp is a bit weedy. The bike is only really good for chugging around town or ambling along country lanes, but if that's all you want it for you'll find it reliable and pleasant enough.

The same goes for the handling - it's no sports bike, the suspension is basic and ground clearance is fairly limited, but overall it handles better than the average cruiser.

One of the most interesting things about the W650 is that it makes a great project bike - quite a few have been turned into cafe racers or flat trackers... Just check out Deus Ex Machina and you'll see what we're talking about.
