Ducati describe the new Hypermotoard as an evolution of the radical original bike and the SP is race ready version for the track. Both bikes share the same now single spark V-Twin engine which is 5kg lighter than the previous model with 5 more BHP. The EVO is a noticeable improvement on the old bike, but the new SP is a huge step forward and makes the Hypermotard even more extreme and track focused than the original, which was too extreme for some to start with.

The engine is exactly the same on both models. Ducati have changed back to a single spark, V-twin, air-cooled engine as the previous model was twin spark.

The cylinder head is completely new, compression has been increased, pistons have a re-designed crown.

Cams are new, ports re-designed and the crankshaft assembly is very 848 like with a lighter flywheel

Considering the basic Evo is designed for the road it worked admirably on track.

At extreme levels ground clearance can be limiting and the standard Pirelli tyres will start to move around, however still giving excellent feedback.

However, if you want a more track focused bike opt for the SP. Much greater ground clearance 30mm, firmer suspension with greater travel and sportier rubber, both bikes have eye popping brakes.

Huge 50mm Marzocchi fully adjustable forks on both models with the SP running slightly different internals, but the same weight springs.

The EVO runs a Sachs rear shock and Ohlins on the SP, again fully adjustable and very high spec. High spec Brembo brakes on both models, and lightweight wheels.

But for the price its relatively basic, no ABS or traction control.

There is no longer any reason to question Ducati reliability, the old stories of poor reliability, poor electrics and horror stories of short service intervals are no longer justified.

The level of finish is very high on both models, with quality names such as Brembo and Ohlins.

The switchgear and clocks are stolen from the Streefighter with gives the bike a race finish.

This is the only real negative of the new model, the standard Evo is expensive at £9100 which makes the SP a wallet busting £10,300 plus £1400 for the full race system as pictured. Yes you are buying a track ready bike with the SP, and its mouth watering, stunning and you have the Ducati brand but for the same price you could buy a 1000cc sports bike, much more practical and quicker on track.
