I have my full UK motorcycle licence and I'm wondering whether I can ride in California on this licence, or whether I'll need a US one. I know you can ride on a UK licence if you're only visiting, but if/how it works for residents.

Yes you will need to get an american licence, but I don't know whether this will involve taking a test or just transferring your british entitlements. In the EU you can just apply for a local licence with the same categories, and I think also in Australia and the Commonwealth countries.
