Qatar MotoGP: Lorenzo tops first practice of 2013

Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo ended the first free practice of 2013 at the top of the timesheets after a late charge. Lorenzo displaced Tech 3 Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow to finish fastest, Crutchlow finished second ahead of Valentino Rossi to complete a Yamaha top three. Rookie Marc Marquez was the highest-placed non-Yamaha onboard his Repsol Honda in fourth ahead of Ducati...

First practice looked good for most and great to see looking Rossi comfortable and at ease on the M1, what a difference. JL looks as good as ever, Dani will be there by qualifying and Marquez clearly having a great time in his first Motogp weekend.
Cal looking fine, the Tech3 squad always turn out a great bike.
Great effort from Dovi, let’s hope some of the changes already made at Ducati are starting to have some positive steps forward. Iannone looks like he might ride the Duke like it needs to be.

Seeing as its Qatar weekend I will continue to ask the same questions as I’ve asked the last 4 years….without any decent answer. Please can someone enlighten me as to why the Motogp riders come out of the last turn onto the start/finish straight and then all drift across the width of the straight to the pit wall and all the way back over before turn 1? They must lose around 10 bike lengths than if they just stayed out to the left foe the right-hander. Any ideas any one?

Rolling radius, racingfan99

Using the side of the tyre lowers the gearing resulting in high engine speeds (rpm) being reached sooner under acceleration out of the final corner - important when you're using a long top gear for maximum speed along the straight.

"holy hell, how fast are the repsol hondas in a straight line!!???!!"

A full 1.7 kph faster than the ducati's... expect the Yamaha's to be bringing up the rear then?

Top Speeds ...

... don't always give an accurate indication of true pace. Of the top three, Lorenzo was only 6th fastest, Crutchlow was back in 10th and Rossi was in 11th - Jlo reported to be to trying different ratio's today. http://resources.motogp.com/files/results/2013/QAT/MotoGP/FP1/MaximumSpeed.pdf?v1_fc292ad5

"Top Speeds... don't always give an accurate indication of true pace"

Agreed, but they're often quoted as the reason that a rider may have had an advantage on the best bike by people who don't understand racing... interestingly the average speed advantage that the Ducati had over it's opposition in 2007 in qualifying was 2.2kph.

2.2 advantage over who? It was 15 clicks at the first race in Losail over Rossi. That's an advantage some people would sell their soul for.

I wasn't trying to say anything other than holy sh#t, thats fast. Top speeds obviously do not tell the whole story.

Geesh dude, if you're not amazed by 344km/h then not much is going to blow your hair back. Its was a simple statement, with no underlying meaning re Yamaha..
