motorcycle sport as family entertainment

P'raps General is not the right place for this but the other day I was looking back at some old family pics. Back in the 1960's/early 70's families turned en-mass over a weekend to watch motorcycle sport. Scrambling, speedway, trials and track. Pack the blanket, picnic and a flask of tea. Share the odd Woodbine with the family next to you. As kids we would run around making bike noises until our lips were numb. We would compare progress of riders  as you logged it in the programme. We would cheer for the underdog, the guy that fell off, the guy at the back, or just the guy in the yellow helmet if nothing else differentiated. Where did it all go wrong? coz back then the working man managed to balance his love of motorsport and ball sport. is it the media that has driven the wedge between us?
