So why worry about extended warranty periods. Never bought one and have made several claims using Sale of Goods Act when the goods were out of warranty (generally one or two years) stated by the shop

very true, 5 years England and 6 years Scotland so I believe, regular checks and servicing come into play for it to be valid.
