I think

that if you're having to wang your eye right to the side then you delay refocussing on the road even longer than dipping it down slightly for the clocks which are already at a distance.

Plus I'd rather not have something potentially bouncing around inside my hat during a crash.

Snev, you're bang on there. A correctly designed HUD could be effective (I wouldn't say better) but this isn't it.

I thought they were rubbish

until I tried one. I was really suprised at how good it was. It might be the same one as you show, unless they all look like that. It wasn't in the way and it was dead easy to see, without even moving your eyes across. I can't describe how it felt. It was something like changing where you focus. I wasn't even aware it was there. It's not just a sat-nav either. You can get all sorts of info from it. I liked the option that tells you what the speed limit is. You can choose what you want it to tell you.

You can get all the same information and more from one of those Scala things you stick on your helmet, but there was something about the HUD that made me want one.

I can happily live without one. It's just another gadget, but it was the vast diference between what I expected and what it actually did that changed my mind. If I had lots of spare money and nothing to spend it on I'd have bought one months ago.
