Don't be baited

Just heard from a friend of mine who's been seriously done for speeding..

He was traveling up the A2 on his recently purchased, Diavel at about 90mph, and spotted a car in his mirror gaining fast.

Being a bit of a macho idiot, (which he admitted himself), he wound on the gas, determined that he wasn't going to get overtaken by a mere tin box.

Long story short.

It was an unmarked high performance Police car, kitted out with all the latest high tech speed measuring and filming equipment. and he got done at just over 140mph.

So that's almost definitely a ban, which means his job has gone, he won't be able to pay the large mortgage, and his Wife has just given birth to their second child.

If he'd just stuck to 90, he would have got away with a fixed penalty.

I may give the Harley shop a ring tomorrow.

Probably looking at a £2,500 fine as well.
His lawyer will try to plead extreme hardship if they hand out a ban, although at 140mph I can't see any other outcome :upset:

watched Police Interceptors

new series last night, bloke in an A5 clocked at 140mph, got away with a 52day ban, which I thought was a pretty good deal !!   ....though I'd hardly call a car coming up fast in my mirrors as baiting.

Wouldn't have done it were it not for the presence of the police car gaining quickly... he was concerned they were going to run into the back of him and increased his speed to avoid an accident?

I think the length of any ban is dependent on previous driving convictions,

I suspect the person who got a 52 day ban, probably had a clean license.

I saw one of these Police programmes, where a pursuing police rider pulled over a whole group who were well into three figure speeds.

They all got offered a speedsafe course at a cost of £200, thus avoiding disqualification,

I think it's at the discretion of the officer.

In Bens case, that officer showed none,

Seeing a fast car closing fast from behind and seeing red, is allowing yourself to be baited, even if the act of baiting was not the intention of the third party.

What an idiot, 90mph is bad enough but 140mph is idiotic,,

I managed 140+ on a blackbird leaving a 3 ltr Nissan in my mirrors at the start of a motorway at 6.15am one morning with all cops asleep.:smile

Don't think your mate is going to have a happy outcome with that one..

Up our way if a car or bike comes charging up behind you its a good idea to slow down....

Classic Gotcha

That is the No.1 gotcha, personally whether I'm riding or driving (my car doesn't hang about either) and I see a car closing fast behind me I hold it down to the limit until I can get eyes on it - then the fun can begin (or not as it should have been in this case).
I agree with Snev, the punishments handed down to speeding motorcyclist is always too harsh, given that nothing actually happened.
I hope the hardship plea works out.
