ignition wiring

hi guys, im new to the forum and new to riding, so please be gentle..lol.

just passed my CBT and want to get out on the road,  i was given a lexmoto a month ago being told it used to run but didn't any more. ok to cut a long story short, can someone please answer my questions? i have power from the loom to the ignition junction box, but no ignition.
1) i have 4 wires coming from loom, but only 3 from ignition to loom. is this normal?
2) could the previous owner have messed up the wiring?
3) can i buy a new ignition with 4 wires and wire that in ( i am capable of wiring it in )
thanks for reading and extra thanks if you can give me some answers..... jane

ignition

Welcome jane, first of all you are dealing with a bike with an E.C.U. and you should be doing checks with the battery disconnected using a multi/meter on the OHMS/continuity setting/test.

Normally you should have a permanent live (red wire) going to the ignition switch and a red/white or red/yellow wire coming out and becoming live when switched on, this wire should feed the ignition light and a fuse box if fitted or live feeds to the horn / flashers and the rest, also could give the ecu an earth to activate.

If you probe the switch red terminal and the red/white terminal do you have continuity when switching on ?
