Bad day out

Was out on bike today got as far as donny (from conisbrough) bike started running on three cylinders so limped home and cleaned plugs started ok so left it running and all of a sudden sounded like the death rattle and clanked and that was it tried starting it again starter just span on so hoped it had dropped its gear took it off and it's running as should be so something in gearbox has gone... But what?.

Engine is out ready for 2moro to have a gander. Bike is rf600r 1995 suzuki any clues? Ps saw the gear inside engine for starter and looks ok?

the camchain.I can't see how the gearbox would stop the engine if it was in neutral.

SIMPLE SOLUTION ...

buy another ( in good nick ) RF600 ,, ( coz there cheap as chips ) and use the clapped out one ( yours ) strictly for spares ......... SORTED ..

btw ... a portion of " chips " in our local chippy costs £1.25p ... they dont do a small portion , which could be cheaper ... just some fuckin " mulch " ..resembling polar bear vomit ... dont use the chippy as a rule though ( but have nipped in for a "steak & kidney "pie now and again ) ...they ALSO do pigs pudding in batter ...and that FUCKIN ROCKS .... ( 50p )

and if ya dont like " pigs pudding in batter " you aint worth shit ...........

sorry

Starter motor just turned like there were no gear on end of it, was hoping the gear had snapped off of the starter but when I took starter off it turned freely and the gear was there so something in gear box or cam chain like oldish says, never done one on bike are they interference like some cars?

adamjs...

just take the cam cover off and see what you can see.And it probably would be cheaper to just buy an engine off ebay and just use yours for practicing on and spares....this one's got an oil leak.

Starter clutch and alternator drive.

A dodgy one of these might be the cause of the poor running and then the free-spinning starter.

Fubar

Well started with the clutch starter basket and took cover off cogs spun both ways so took gears off the saw the culprit looks like the cog behind the clutch basket has disappeared into the sump? As u can see (I hope ) snapped off and possibly jammed in accounts for the clank I heard easy or hard to do? And what is the cog called (clutch cog) ? Magnet is showing one one pic and finger on clutch starter in another
