Fitting a new chain

1 of 1

If you are thinking of changing your chain there are a few things you should consider.

You can get more out of it, if you keep it scrupulously lubricated and adjusted through its life, ideally with the lube drip-fed as you ride by a Scottoiler or the like.

Don’t just fit a chain on its own as it will wear very rapidly to match already worn sprockets. Work on an hour to an hour and a half for a garage to do it.

If you go the DIY route, and purchase a chain splitter and riveter, then before you “grind off” the rivets to remove the old chain, loosen the front sprocket nut first, it’s easier to undo with the chain attached to the back wheel sprocket, should you need to use excessive force on the front sprocket nut.
