A 125 is the easy way into motorcycling. You don't even have to pass your full test - you can ride a 125cc motorcycle with L plates after taking a day's training course (CBT). They're unintimidating to ride, cheap to run and a great way to learn. Plus they come in all shapes and sizes - from sports bikes to supermotos.

Scooters are all about basic and affordable transport. They're comfortable and ideally suited to the city commute (especially since motorcycles are exempt from London congestion charges). Most have a large storage area under the seat for your shopping and helmet.

If you have an ‘A2’ licence, you’ll only be able to ride a bike of up to 47bhp. You can have a more powerful machine restricted providing it doesn’t make more than 94bhp to begin with.

*If you passed the standard motorcycle test before January 19 2013, and within the last two years, and you haven’t followed it up with a further test, you’ll be restricted to 33bhp. You’re permitted to restrict a bike of any power to that level.
