New look for 749/999

A Madrid-based Ducati specialist is going to this week’s Padova bike show with the claim that its first prototype will show the Italians how it should be done.

Radical Ducati’s RAD 01 is the first of a series of ‘new sports bikes’ the firm claims it will create to ‘ignite Ducati enthusiasts.’ Essentially, it’s selling bodykits. The creation will be shown in public for the first time at the Padova Show in Italy on January 20-22.

Founder Jose ‘Pep’ Rosell said: “Our aim is to create motorcycles we love, that it seems Ducati is no longer capable of making themselves. I want people to fall in love with Ducati again.”

The RAD01 is based on a 749R with a new body designed by Type U of Barcelona. The firm says it is inspired by the ‘raw emotion’ of the 916 but has also been created to be easier to live or race with.

The tank is bigger (at 20 litres), ventilation around the rear cylinder is improved, weight reduced (with the usual lashings of carbon-fibre) and work has been done with the intention of refining the aerodynamics – including moving the light clusters to the sides.

The kit will fit on any standard 749 or 999, says the firm it will cost less than 2000 Euros (£1370). It includes body, fuel tank, new headlights, rear light and composite front subframe, new composite water recovery tank and ram air tubes. They claim it can be fitted in under an hour.
