BMW C650GT first ride: “takes scooter equipment to a new level”

Steve Farrell, 12 March 2012 17:08

The BMW C650 GT is one of the most sophisticated scooters yet - and the first to cost over £10,000. I've just ridden the new super scooter at the launch in Madrid. With heated seat and grips, ABS and electronically adjustable screen, it takes scooter equipment to a new level. It's got the go of a middleweight motorcycle - just ...

BMW answers MCN theft campaign

Steve Farrell, 05 January 2012 16:34

BMW has become the first manufacturer to security mark all new bikes in response to an MCN campaign. The firm will mark every bike it sells with a unique hidden code on dozens of individual parts linking them to the owner. The system deters thieves by making it more difficult for them to sell the bike or parts without getting ...

Staff bikes: BMW G650GS - Bye-bye Beemer

Steve Farrell, 13 October 2011 16:34

Like many motorcyclists I'm sure, every day I'm watched through my window by my little lad as I get on my bike and ride off to work. So I'm not the only one who will be a little sad that BMW has asked for the G650GS back early. Readers of my recent updates may remember me complaining about the early ...

Staff bikes: BMW G650GS - Who needs the badge?

Steve Farrell, 07 September 2011 12:39

In a recent update I highlighted the disappointingly early beginnings of corrosion on my G650GS's frame, a development that has left me dreading winter. Now I’ve got a BMW cover, which should help. It's lovely, as BMW accessories tend to be, with a number plate window and integral storage bag. But I got a shock when I saw the price. ...

Staff bikes: BMW G650GS - Corrosion sets in

Steve Farrell, 09 August 2011 13:28

I really like my G650GS. So I’m massively disappointed to report that the paintwork doesn’t seem to be up to much. Corrosion is already beginning to appear in places and it’s not yet had to endure a single winter. A BMW spokesman said: ‘Obviously I can’t really comment on the cause of the corrosion until the bike has been inspected. ...

Staff bikes: BMW G650GS - When different isn’t better

Steve Farrell, 03 June 2011 10:12

In my last update on the G650GS I’m riding this year, I mentioned how BMWs are different to other bikes in the detail. I said they were not always better but never without effort. Well, here’s an example : The indicator switch. The G650GS does not feature BMW’s famously different three-switch arrangement, with a button on each bar to activate ...

Staff bikes: BMW G650GS - 'Quality'

Steve Farrell, 21 April 2011 16:46

I’ve just spent my first weekend with the BMW G650GS, after taking delivery of it on Friday, and the word I want to say is: quality. You’d never guess this is one of the cheapest big bikes you can buy. The screen is as blemish-free as glass, so much so that I can attach my sat nav with a suction ...

Why new bikes aren’t as heavy as you think

Steve Farrell, 21 April 2011 16:23

The specifications of some small-to-middle-weight new bikes have caused disquiet on the forums of MCN this year. One user wrote of the new Honda CBR250R, which weighs 162kg and makes a claimed 26bhp: “I can't believe how heavy these things are. Modern four-cylinder 600s are down to this sort of weight.” Another user said both the CBR250R and the 169kg ...
