First ride: Triumph Speed Triple R

1 of 4

Triumph’s new-for-2012, uprated Speed Triple R is currently being tested by MCN in southern Spain. These are Senior Road Tester Michael Neeves’ first impressions:

“I’m at the launch of the new Triumph Speed Triple R at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain. Compared to the standard Speed Triple, the £11,299 R version has Ohlins front and rear suspension, Brembo monobloc front radial calipers, lightweight forged aluminium wheels and a new gearbox, which will carry through to new 1050cc models in the future.

“There’s an ABS version for an extra £600. It also has some tasty carbon fibre parts and some cosmetic tweaks. Luckily I know Jerez and the Speed Triple well, so there’s not too much ‘getting to know you time’.

“With all the chassis tweaks the Triumph is a delight around the circuit and as much fun as the stocker is on the road. You can ride the Street Triple R like a racer, albeit one where you’ve got your elbows right out thanks to the big bars.

“I’ve done one session so far and am looking forward to really getting to know it throughout the day. Check out my full report in MCN next week.”
