The Scooter Diaries

I have a story I thought you might all be interested in, one that should have been told 50 years ago. In 1959, my Dad quit his job as a newspaper reporter, sold his car and bought a ’58 Lambretta 150cc scooter.

He intended to ride it all the way down to Peru. He didn’t know if anyone had ever attempted such a journey but he was going to try. Three weeks before the trip, he met and fell instantly in love with a beautiful woman who was originally from Denmark.

Suddenly he had misgivings about leaving on what could be a year long trip, but it was too late to back out. Immediately after leaving, though, he felt he had made a horrible mistake and had left the woman of his dreams behind.

So he wrote her a letter professing his love, asking her to fly down to Mexico City, marry him, and continue on the scooter down to South America for as long as their money would hold out. She said yes, and that’s what they did.

I grew up listening to all the amazing stories of their incredible adventure through Mexico, Central America and South America. I kept telling my Dad that he should write them down, and he would always just smile.

When he passed away in 2004, I discovered an old yellowed manuscript about the journey, which he must have written shortly after his trip. I’ve spent years turning it into a book called “The Scooter Diaries”, complete with restored 35mm photos.

It’s all done. Now I am trying to crowd fund its printing via Kickstarter. http://kickstarter.thescooterdiaries.com
