Police crackdown on drink and drug-drivers

Police forces nationwide launched a clampdown last week on motorists driving under the influence of drink or drugs over the Christmas period.

The Government and police forces are making a joint effort to minimise the traditional rise in alcohol and drug related accidents over the festive periods. Young men are the main target of the Think! campaign, but the Department for Transport is hoping the message from new internet and radio adverts will sink into the minds of all drivers. The current TV advertising campaign ‘Moment of Doubt’ anti-drink drive adverts will continue as well as further advertising in pubs and cinemas.

The education campaign will be backed by an enforcement operation to be co-ordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). Chief Constable Stephen Green, ACPO lead on Roads Policing said: “Forces across the country will be patrolling the roads vigilantly for those driving under the influence and are united in their determination to stop the reckless driving of a few ruining Christmas for the many.”

Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: “I have been out with Sussex Police on their first Christmas crackdown this year, and was amazed at how even the smallest sign can give drink drivers away to these highly trained officers. Being caught has serious consequences – a criminal record, minimum one year driving ban and large fine. It’s just not worth paying this price for a couple of drinks at the Christmas party. Leave the car keys at home.”
