£250 for causing death

A teenage van driver who admitted to careless driving causing the death of a biker has received a fine of just £250.

Nineteen-year-old John McGuire of Shettleston, Glasgow, was involved in a collision with biker Vincent Crossan in Cumbernauld on April 3 last year (2006).

Crash investigators at the scene established that the bike was travelling at 21mph at the time of the accident; however they were unable to measure the speed of the van driven by McGuire. The victim’s family were not in court to hear the case where the teenager escaped any jail time and instead has had six penalty points added to his licence and has to pay £10 a week to cover his fine.
