Submariner rollneck sweater, £89.99

Time tested: five months, 4000 miles

What’s good? This woolly jumper has been my saviour through the cold winter months. It’s based on sweaters supplied as standard issue to submariners during World War Two. I’ve grown so fond of it I wear it everywhere and it’s not frayed on me yet. The traditional jumper acts like a furnace when thrown on top of a thermal base layer. It’s tough and durable and the rollneck protects my neck on long cold rides. It doesn’t have that bulky feeling either so it fits snugly under my bike jacket without constricting my arms.

What’s not? The £90 price is a little hefty for a jumper but this is a high-quality piece of kit that can be worn both on and off the bike. It’s made in the UK by a family-run firm and doesn’t feel cheap in the slightest. Authentic submariner tops like this usually cost upward of £100 so this is a bargain.
