Marks & Spencer thermal long pants, £14-£35

Time used: Over 20 years

What’s good? I can’t remember exactly when I bought these, but I know they’re from M&S and I got them in my late teens to wear on skiing holidays. They’re so old that the words have worn off the label, so I don’t even know what they’re made of - I think they’re some kind of cotton/polyester mix. But, I still wear them to this day, under leathers and Gore-Tex trousers when it’s cold. Sometimes cheap and cheerful is best and you don’t need overly technical, dedicated bike gear to do a simple job. These old long johns are thin enough to be comfy under anything and always keep me warm.

What’s not? The arse is pretty saggy now.
