Supermoto: Christian Iddon is double supermoto champion

Christian Iddon only needed a single 10th position in any of the three races at Silverstone in the final round of the British Supermoto Championship to take the crown.

But he did it in superb style by taking a race two victory although not after some drama in the first race to add a little tension to the day’s proceedings.

The weekend started out superbly for Christian Iddon by taking the fastest laps in both free practice sessions and then following it up by taking the pole position in qualifying by a relatively massive 1.5 seconds.

Even that wasn’t without drama though as Christian Iddon high-sided his Aprilia 550 SXV while trying to better his already fantastic time.

“Everything seems to be going so well,” he said.

“I was doing really good times without having to really push. Having said that I was out to do a mega lap near the end, I caught a bit of dirt and went flying.”

As the riders blasted off the line for the start of the first race, Christian Iddon rounded the first turn in fourth but immediately began picking off the riders in front.

It was short-lived though as an engine breather problem meant a mixture of water and oil was seeping onto his rear tyre and on the second lap Christian Iddon had a fast crash down the back section of the track because of the leak.

He eventually remounted to finish 13th, agonisingly close to the 10th spot needed to take the crown but for the meantime at least, it was all still to play for.

Race two was much simpler though and despite having to start from 13th place on the grid and having to ride his spare bike, Christian Iddon worked his way through the field to take the British Championship crown with a race victory.

“It was a similar story in the final race where Christian took off and led the race by up to 10 seconds to win the final race of the season in emphatic style.

Christian Iddon said: “It’s fantastic to win the British Championship again. It’s a double Championship too as I took the Open class and the Overall British Honours.

“I’m so pleased to have taken the titles while riding so well too. Apart from the first race mishap the weekend has gone so smoothly in terms of riding.

“The bike has been amazing as always and to be so far ahead of the competition is just unreal.

“I’d like to thank all my sponsors for all the work and support they give me. These titles are as much theirs as they are mine.”

Christian Iddon’s next outing will be this weekend (September 29-30, 2007) where he will represent his country in the Supermoto Des Nations at Franciacorta in Italy.
