AMA Motocross: James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto rule again at High Point

James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto were again the dominant force as the AMA National series moved to the High Point circuit at Mount Morris.

For Stewart, it was a matter once more of dealing with the fast-starting Mike Alessi and then just putting his Monster Energy Kawasaki on cruise control until the chequered flag came out. Alessi is on a fine run of form himself at the minute, but even though he is one of the few riders to actually be ahead of Stewart this season, he’s well aware that Stewart is in a class of his own at the moment.

On a day of unusual consistency, the top five were repeated for both motos, Stewart ahead of Alessi, Davi Millsaps, Stewart’s team-mate Tim Ferry and Andrew Short.

The only person who can stop James Stewart at the minute is James Stewart, but the fight for second in the championship is wide open, with Alessi, Millsaps and Ferry separated by just five points.

Likewise for Ryan Villopoto, Pro Circuit’s latest red-headed superstar has won the last seven motos on the trot, including a comfortable brace at High Point.

The class is strong at the minute as Jake Weimar took a career-best second this weekend, ahead of the likes of Ryan Dungey and Austin Stroupe. But Villopoto is just that much better than everyone else.

Just a week ago, the highly-touted Jason Lawrence received a suspended fine from the AMA because of an incident involving beer and a rolled rental car on the Saturday evening before the race. You can bet your bottom dollar that, while that was happening, Villopoto was still out there walking the track and checking lines.
