Gino Rea reflects on missed podium chance

British rider Gino Rea saw a golden chance to claim his second Moto2 podium in the last three races slip away in a rain-hit Valencia race.

Rea, who scored a sensational third in a storm-lashed Sepang race last month, was fourth and right behind Marc Marquez when he lost the front of his Suter machine at Turn 2 on lap 16.

He remounted to finish 12th and he said: “I’m gutted really because I should have been on the podium. I got such a good start I thought I’d jumped it so the first couple of laps I was waiting to be hauled in for a ride through.

“I knew Marquez could up the pace and I felt I could have gone with him and it should have been a podium at least.

“I was losing a bit of rear grip compared to Marquez, so I had to make up time on the brakes. There was a dry patch starting to come and I just lost the front.”
