Jorge Lorenzo completes further shoulder surgery

Jorge Lorenzo has undergone a second major operation on his left shoulder in 15 days after a vicious Sachsenring high-side yesterday (Friday) ruled the reigning world champion out of the German MotoGP round.

Lorenzo fell heavily at Turn 10 in FP2 and damaged a titanium plate he’d only had inserted a fortnight ago following a high-speed accident at Assen which broke his left collarbone.

He took a private jet back to Barcelona last night and underwent an additional two-hour operation this morning that included inserting a new plate and 10 screws.
Lorenzo raced to a heroic fifth place in Assen just 48 hours after breaking his left collarbone in three places but he will not be completing a miracle return to Germany.

There has still been no confirmation about whether he will travel to California next week to attempt to ride his factory Yamaha YZR-M1 in Laguna Seca.

Dr Joaquin Rodriquez, who headed up the team that has carried out both shoulder operations on the 26-year-old, said: “As a result of the trauma suffered in the crash yesterday the original fracture suffered a little movement that required a new surgery to close the space and reduce the fracture by the osteosynthesis method and with a new plate.

The new plate needed 10 screws plus 1 inter fragmentary screw. We then needed to take out some bone substance from the pelvis that was mixed with dried bone. We placed this implant into the collarbone to stimulate the creation of the callus and help speed up the consolidation of the bone. The operation lasted two hours
