Ryan Farquhar contemplates future

Ireland’s top road racer Ryan Farquhar admitted that the death of Andrew Neill, killed in practice for a 125cc race at the Walderstone meeting on Sunday, has made him question his future in the sport.

Yesterday Farquhar told the Newsletter, one of the leading Belfast newspapers, that, “When something like this happens you question yourself about why you do it, but I think I’ve become hardened to it because I’ve been doing this for a lot of years now and I’ve seen this happen time and again.

“Sometimes I wish I was able to walk away from it, but as long as road racing keeps going, I’ll keep doing it, because I’m addicted to it.”

According to the Newsletter, Farquhar and Neil went to the same school in Dungannon but were separated by two years.

Neill (27) had recently won a 250 race at the Bush Road Races, finished fourth in the Billown 250TT and Skerries, and was eighth in the 250cc race at the North West 200.

The Walderstone meeting was cancelled after the fatal accident.

Farquhar is due to compete at the Southern 100 on the Billown course near Castletown, Isle of Man this week.
