World Supersport Valencia test: Graeme Gowland fastest before big crash

Graeme Gowland ended the opening day of testing at Valencia in the medical centre after suffering a massive crash at the fast turn three onboard his Bejan Honda CBR600RR.

Despite the crash Gowland topped the time sheets in the second session to claim a top four overall position at the end of day one.

The 22-year-old Brit classes the Valencia circuit as his home track having raced in the CEV Spanish Championship last year, but got caught out on lap 19 when he lost the front.

He then managed to save it, before getting tangled up with the bike as it cart wheeled through the gravel trap.

Speaking to MCN at the medical centre, Graeme Gowland said: “I was worried when I finally stopped rolling because my ankle was tingling and I thought I’d broke it, but since getting some ice on it, it seems to have calmed down.

“I owe a lot to my Daytona boots which I think saved my ankle today.

“I feel that I’ve still got a lot to learn with the Pirelli front tyre as I’ve been caught out a couple of times.

“I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to get out on track tomorrow as I don’t have any leathers.

“My best set got ripped in transit coming back from Australia and the set I was wearing today got completely destroyed.”

Gowland also experienced a harmless front end crash earlier in the session at turn two.
