Laverty targets third consecutive win after taking pole

Eugene Laverty secured his third pole position of the year at Kyalami, but revealed that he is not sure that he wanted it. His two previous poles at Portimao and Valencia both ended in disappointment when he crashed in Portugal and suffered a rear tyre problem in Spain.

Laverty was pushed all the way by Hannspree Ten Kate Honda man Kenan Sofuoglu with championship leader Joan Lascorz riding the Motocard.com Kawasaki down in eighth on the grid.

Laverty said: “I wasn’t sure if I wanted pole or not. I put a good lap time in early on but then didn’t bother with a new tyre for the rest of the session. I haven’t got many problems around this track apart from Kenan.

“He is looking strong and I think its going to be between us right until the end. How the bike handles the bumps depending on the fuel load will be a big thing, but we’ve got a good setting for the whole race I think.

“I don’t know what’s going on with Kawasaki, Lascorz normally comes good on a Saturday afternoon but he’s ended up on the back of the second row. If he can do those sort of times consistently it’s not a bad race pace.”

Brit Chaz Davies progressed well during qualifying to secure sixth on the grid with Gino Rea 12th.

The World Supersport race gets underway at 13.30 local time.
