Sylvain Guintoli has won his first World Superbike race in exactly a year, after red flags brought a premature end to Eugene Laverty’s hopes of a double victory.

Guintoli was part of a four way battle for the victory alongside Laverty, Tom Sykes and Loris Baz when the Northern Irishman’s engine dramatically let go, bringing out the red flags with seven laps remaining.

Fellow Frenchman Loris Baz was second, while champion Tom Sykes bounced back froma  disappointing first race to take the final podium spot.

Davide Guigliano was fourth ahead of the British trio of Rea, Haslam and Davies, while Marco Melandri was back in eighth after running wide, a fate also suffered by Alex Lowes, who finished the day in 13th place.
