Best all-round sports tyre

Published: 22 July 2010

Q. I bought a Suzuki GSX-R750 K5 about three months ago and I’m coming to the point where I need some new tyres.

I am currently running Michelin Pilot 2CTs which feel really good under me, but I wondered what else is out there?

The bike is used for daily running to work, does the occasional track day as well as some longer journeys up north and down to Devon on motorways (200+ miles).

Yes, it has to do everything!

A. If you would like to get over 5000 miles out of a rear and want to stay with Michelin, then Pilot Road 2s will do the job. Don’t be put off by the 'sports touring' tag.

These tyres give more than enough grip on the road, can be thrashed with the best of them, but also give back good mileage. If the front has still got some life, pair one of those up with the 2CT on the front to give a bit more grip on the front.

Other tyres that are in the ballpark are: Dunlop Sportsmarts or Qualifier II, Bridgestone BT-016, Metzeler Sportec M5 and Pirelli Diablo Rosso or Rosso Corsas.
