Why is my Virago's battery running dry?

Published: 03 January 2012

Q. The battery on my Yamaha Virago ran dry so I replaced it at the same time as putting some heated grips on. I don’t use these much, but after two weeks the new battery has lost 60% of its liquid and feels very hot.

I’ve topped it up with distilled water again and it’s now on charge. I found the breather pipe was pinched, so re routed it. Could that have been the cause?

A. A kinked breather tube would not cause these symptoms, but a knackered regulator/rectifier would, allowing too much charge into the battery. If you know how to use a multimeter I’d also check the alternator output, but you need to replace the reg/rec (hopefully before it’s ruined your new battery).
