I never knew insurance was so interesting…

IN MCN tomorrow (February 13), we’ve raided the records and talked to the experts at Carole Nash to reveal some fascinating facts about bike insurance. No, really!

We’ve found the answers to all kinds of questions about the factors that are used to assess your risk level, plus unearthed some truly bizarre stories as well. Some are as you’d expect, others less so. Here’s some examples:

Occupation most likely to crash: Engineer

Occupation least likely to crash: Lecturer

Most commonly crashed bike: Yamaha Fazer 600

Most commonly stolen bike: Yamaha R6

Most effective anti-theft device: Thatcham-approved combined alarm and immobiliser

Worst area for bike theft: London

Worst area for accidents: London

CN’s highest premium: Company Director, 51, from London. Fully Comprehensive on Boss Hoss V8, value £21,000. Cost: £2,600

CN’s lowest premium ever: Retired, 65, from Staffordshire, Fully Comprehensive (Classic) on BSA A65, value £5000. Cost £30

Average insurance premium: Office worker, 42, from Northampton. Fully Comprehensive on BMW R1100, value £3000. Cost: £232

Most determined thieves: A 48-year-old from Middlesex thought he’d done everything possible to secure his £9500 MV Agusta F4 when he locked it in his garage, chained it to the wall, parked his car between it and the door, and double-padlocked his garage door. But he hadn’t counted on thieves dismantling the wall from the outside and stealing the bike… and the breeze-block it was secured to.

Are you a London-based engineer who now rides a Fazer 600 after your R6 was nicked, crashed and written off? Are you REALLY that bad a risk? Follow the link (right) to voice your views on this subject.
