"Traffic signs make roads less safe"

1 of 1

Improving road safety by making junctions more dangerous may seem a bizarre idea, but that is exactly what traffic consultant Ben Hamilton-Bailie told the Institution of Civil Engineers.

The approach has already proved successful in Holland and Denmark, and relies on the idea that drivers will be more careful if they perceive more danger. Without road signs and road markings, they are forced to slow down and make eye contact with other road users to establish who makes the next move.

This has lead to many new junctions in Northern Europe resembling the days before cars were commonplace, and it is said that it has reduced accidents without affecting journey times, but it does rely on vehicles travelling below 20mph.

Do you think that this is a good idea? Or do you think it will make junctions even more dangerous for motorcyclists? Let us know by posting your thoughts on the News discussion board by following the link on the right.
