City pulls its corrupt bike cops

In a city of corrupt police officers, Mexico City’s motorcycle cops are considered the most corrupt.

So, in a desperate attempt at restoring a little of the lost faith in its boys in blue, city officials ordered them all into re-education programmes.

Initially it was just the male officers who were withdrawn, police bosses believing their female colleagues to be more honest, but eventually the whole 815-strong force was pulled off the streets.

The clean-up comes in the wake of recent scandals and a survey in one leading newspaper that found 95 per cent of those polled said the word “corruption” best characterised the City’s motorcycle force.

Officers blame low pay and say that they’re often forced to negotiate with local courier firms just to ensure they have a reliable bike.
