Wrong focus for speed cameras

1 of 1

The police are misleading the public over the placement of speed cameras, according to a recent investigation by the Bristol Evening Post.

The paper has discovered that out of the 40 accident blackspots it surveyed, ‘safety’ cameras are only in operation at seven of the sites despite a nationwide policy of only placing cameras in locations with a proven accident record.

Reporters from the paper asked Bristol City, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire councils to supply them with a list of their worst accident blackspots and then compared the data to the location of the speed cameras.

They found that despite 192 accidents being recorded at the top ten sites between January 2000 and December 2002, including 29 people killed or seriously injured, not one of the sites is covered by a camera.
