Tories offer Gatso purge

1 of 1

The Conservative party has pledged to scrap speed cameras which have not reduced accidents, and proposed higher motorway speed limits if they are elected into power.

The party claims it will make driving ‘less of a misery’ by auditing all 5000 cameras across England and Wales. They also propose increasing the speed limit on some sections of motorway to 80mph, while lowering the limits near schools and hospitals to 20mph. And speed limits would be more clearly signposted, with the limit displayed by every speed camera to counter claims motorists are often confused about what speed limit is in place.

The Conservatives also offer more traffic police on patrol, targetting unsafe vehicles and drivers who are uninsured, untaxed or without a licence.

The ideas are not new but are now grouped together to provide opposition against the Labour government which backs speed cameras, with a recent government audit finding 95% of cameras saved lives and injuries.

Would higher speed limits and scrapping ineffective cameras be enough to make you vote Conservative in the next election? Or do you think these ideas will be shelved with a Conservative government? Tell us what you think by posting your opinions here.
