Council boss's bike meet

A borough council leader has started a council-backed bike meet in St Anne’s town centre.

Cllr John Coombs is leader of Fylde Borough Council, which covers the Fylde coast between Preston and Blackpool.

A committed biker, Cllr Coombs hopes the new Monday night meet will attract riders to St Anne’s Square to sample it’s pubs, cafes and restaurants and reckons it could match Poole’s seaside bike nights – which currently attract up to 1500 bikes a week.

If it takes off he’s hoping local businesses will start offering discounts. Last Monday, only the second time the St Anne’s night had been held, around 100 bikes turned up.

“It’s a bit of positive PR for bikes and bikers when we’re so often run down,” said the CBR600 rider.

The meeting place is in the town centre car parks (free of charge) on St Annes Road West between 7 and 9 pm.

He’s hoping visitors will donate £1 each to help local community projects.
