GSX-R750: 21-years on

1 of 1

Next week MCN celebrates 21 years of the original superbike – Suzuki’s GSX-R750. We’ve taken one of the original bikes out for a spin.

The GSX-R we got our hands on was an original 1985 Japanese import with just 50,000 kilometres on the clock. Like any 21-year-old bike it has the battle scars to prove its age.

But despite the scrapes the retro appeal makes it a great looker. Tidy it up a bit and take it to a bike meet and you’ll get far more attention than any of the big spenders on their brand new 06 models.

Compared to modern machines the GSX-R performance isn’t going to set the world on fire but for having fun throwing it around country roads it’s a blast. The soft suspension irons out the bumps today’s firmer set-ups transmit to your butt.

At just 176kg dry and around 100bhp it’s far from slow. The way you sit in the bike rather than on it and the way the engine whines makes it feel you’re going a lot faster than you really are. And let’s face it, in today’s camera-infested world, that can be a good thing.
Sell your bike to the biggest audience in biking
If you don’t feel up to riding a modern sports bike to its ragged edge, you’re into the retro thing, or you’re just looking for a sports bike with a relatively low seat height at a big-value price, then the older GSX-Rs tick the boxes.

You can get a bike like this one for around £1400 and there are plenty of 1985-90 bikes for around £2000 in our Bikes for Sale section.
