Speed camera inaccuracy could get 100’s off speeding fines

Hundreds of road users in Lancashire could get off their speeding fines if allegations of speed cameras being incorrectly calibrated are found to be correct.

Five members of civilian staff have been temporarily removed from positions Lancashire Constabulary’s central processing centre in Blackburn following the discovery of the potential error.

The force has called in the Independent Police Complaints Commissions following an internal inquiry. It is alleged that one of the five members of staff incorrectly calibrated at least one mobile speed camera, and four other staff incorrectly processed documents required by courts. The removed members of staff are now on other duties while the investigation takes place.

More than 200 road users are believed to be affected by the camera alleged to be inaccurate. Investigations will reveal whether any other cameras are affected. Lancashire Constabulary say any Notices of Intended Prosecution incorrectly issued will be withdrawn, and anyone affected will be contacted.
