Setback for road pricing trials

Motorcycle road pricing trials due to start next month have been delayed, the Department for Transport said today.

The trials of technology to be used in future road pricing schemes will not begin until this summer or later, according to a spokesman.

MCN revealed last June that the Government was preparing to begin road pricing ‘demonstrations’ this March.

The DfT said at the time that motorcyclists would be among 1000 volunteer road users to take part in tests of pay-as-you-travel technology to be used in road pricing schemes from 2012.

A spokesman said today that plans were “a bit behind”. He said the project was unlikely to begin before “the second half of the year”.

Explaining the delay, he said: “We want to make sure we get the right people to do the right job.”
