Lazer launches Superskin helmets

We reported on this Lazer innovation last year, and now it’s become available to the masses.

According to Lazer, the Superskin protects from the deep, devastating and inoperable damage that can occur deep inside the brain during a motorcycle accident when the head rotates after hitting a solid surface such as the road or another vehicle.

It uses the Phillips Head Protection System (PHPS) under licence from Phillips Helmets Limited – a flexible membrane system which has reportedly been proven in scientific tests to increase the protection from rotational head injury by a massive 60% compared with a conventional motorcycle helmet.

What Lazer is trying to prevent

Any blow to the head also results in a sharp, inevitable and immediate rotation of the skull and the brain, which has potentially devastating and untreatable effects on soft brain tissue and blood vessels.

These can literally be ripped apart by the shearing forces inside the brain.

Rotational Head Injury can happen deep within the brain and is not always visible or apparent on the surface of the brain.

These twisting forces are the cause of most severe brain injury.

The COST 3272 study, a multi-national European research study on motorcycle accidents, found that 67% of motorcycle road casualties sustained head injury.

Rotational head injury was responsible for over 60% of the head injuries and called for helmet design to “ensure that the potential for rotation is minimised.” The Lazer Superskin does just that.

How it works

The scalp offers natural protection from rotational head injury and provides frictionless movement minimising rotation of the skull and brain itself – the Lazer Superskin works in the same way.

It uses the Phillips Head Protection SystemTM (PHPS) – a flexible lubricated membrane that has been added over the hard shell of the helmet.

The lubricant and elastic quality of the membrane on the helmet decreases rotational forces when a head hits the tarmac or a vehicle, and cuts their rotational effect by over 60% in the critical milliseconds following a blow.

This significantly reduces head trauma and decreases the risk of rotational head injury.

Stringent scientific tests3 have verified that upon head impact the LAZER SuperSkin helmet slows the rotational spin and decreases the rotational impact reducing the risk of ‘intra-cerebral shearing’ and the resulting brain injury by 67.5%. From this evidence it can be estimated that:

  • The Lazer Superskin Helmet could potentially convert around 20% of deaths to serious injuries
  • 60% of serious injuries could be reduced in severity, and it is possible that some would be converted to slight injury
  • 10% of slight injuries could potentially be avoided
