Britain’s roads are crumbling as freezing conditions create thousands of new potholes, the AA has warned.

Roads are breaking up as water freezes and expands in cracks in the surface and the problem is set to worsen as the cold snap continues.

AA President Edmund King said: “I’m aware of millions of potholes up and down the country.

“We’re getting reports that many roads are crumbling in places, particularly where there have previously been temporary repairs. This is going to affect thousands motorcyclists.

“Normally potholes appear about February or March but due to this cold snap they’re appearing now.”
