Triumph grow in 2009

Despite an overall drop of 10% in sales of large capacity motorcycles in the UK, Triumph increased sold 26% more bikes in 2009, with a record figure of 7450. Triumph also grew its market share of +500cc machines from 9.2% in 2008 to 13% (+3.8%).

Triumph has further reason to open the bubbly with increased market share in other key countries, namely the US (+0.3%), France/Switzerland (0.7%) and Germany/Austria 0.8%).

While the increase in figures for foreign markets don’t read as huge improvements, any sales increase in the current economic climate can be hailed as a success – and the reason why Triumph has increased its global market share from 3.4% to 4.4% (+1.0%).

A 50% increase in sales of the Daytona 675 in 2009 is one of the reasons for Triumph’s success – helped in part by being named MCN’s Sports Bike of the Year 2009. And such is the popularity of the new Thunderbird, the waiting list for this machine will not be cleared until March this year.

The updated version of the Bonneville also proved to be a hit with more than double the amount sold in 2009 compared to the previous year.

Australia was also an earner for Triumph, with a 0.8% increase in total machines sold there, with five of its range of models sitting in the top ten of ‘naked’ bikes.

It is 20 years this year since today’s Triumph Motorcycles first exhibited its hopes and dreams of a new future at the Cologne bike show and, quite rightly so, all 1200 employees have every reason to puff their chests out…
