Cologne Bike Show: Knox launches revolutionary new body armour

1 of 2

British firm Knox have launched their revolutionary new ‘Kinesis’ impact protectors at the Cologne show today.

Claiming to be the most significant innovation in impact protection since the introduction of a European standard in 1995, Kinesis is said not to just absorb energy from an impact, but it deflects it.

Developed during routine impact testing, when a 5KG weight is dropped onto new designs to test their impact absorption properties, the Knox team discovered less energy was transmitted if the sample protector slipped out of position when hit.

They realised that this is because an oblique force deflects much of the energy from an impact, whereas blunt force is transmitted directly.

By adding a moving outer shell to the protector Knox claim it’s possible to deflect as much as 25% of the energy from an impact, greatly reducing the force that’s transmitted to the wearer.

We’ll see the new technology in manufacturers’ new kit at the end of 2011.
