Long Way Down inspires ‘Lawn Way Down’

Inspired by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s ‘Long Way Down’, two lawnmowers are this week being driven from John O’Groats to Land’s End in aid of charity. Their two drivers, Tony Dwight and Darren Whitehead, who both normally race the machines, are raising money for Help for Heroes and Cancer research UK.

The machines are vintage lawnmowers with upgraded brakes and engines as well as modifications to make them road legal.

Tony told MCN: “I was watching The Long Way Down one evening and said to my wife ‘I need an adventure’. From there it all spiralled. Since I race lawn mowers, I thought about a similar idea but it was suggested to do John O’Groats to Land’s End. It’s taken 12 months to get everything in place.”

He added: “I decided on Help for Heroes because I’m ex-military and Darren’s mum unfortunately passed away due to cancer so it made sense to choose both.”

The pair set off on their adventure on the August 7. For more information click here
